On the subject of empathy towards the views of other denominations, I am reminded of an exchange that I had with a good friend of mine, Debbie, while we were visiting in a booth in the Walmart Snack Bar a few years ago. While we were talking, an Amish woman dressed in traditional Amish garb--a black dress and a white cap--slowly pushed her Walmart cart past the Snack Bar. I pointed her out to Debbie and told her, "I hope you know that when it's all said and done that those folks there (the Amish) are going to be sitting on golden thrones while you and I are out working in the fields."
Debbie smiled and replied, "I know. That's why I'm always nice to them," leading us both to laugh.
A few days later, I shared that exchange with my daughter, Holly, and after I had finished, Holly asked me, "Is that true?"
I replied, "I don't know. I guess it could be," leading me to laugh.
